Mainsail was formed in the summer of 2009 in the California surf town of Ventura, CA by Joel C Bennett.  Inspired by the beauty and spirit of Southern California, the Chicago native set out to blend surf music, indie-rock, and 80s shoegaze into a package that is undeniably catchy, unique, and upbeat.

Recorded in the Ventura and Chicago, the self-released debut album is available now on iTunes, Amazon.com, and other major online retailers.  Catch Mainsail live as they set sail throughout California in early 2010.

In 2005 Joel C Bennett fronted the turbulent Chicago-favorite Blue Shade Witness, signed to Double Zero Records.  One of the only non-punk bands signed to the label, the band played over 100 shows and before peaking and disbanding at the nationally recognized Cornerstone Music Festival.  In love with the Pacific Coast, he relocated to California and independently released the City of Angels E.P. followed by writing and recording with the british-influenced Give Away Your Hearts in 2007.

Mainsail changes course significantly.  1980s surf culture, sea life, and sunsets combine in a swirl of harmonies and references to local haunts.  The rocking “Clean Line” shuns corporate life for lounging on the beach.  Playful vintage synths repeat over an ode to the channel islands in “Endless Summer“.  “Diosa del Mar” layers an epic chorus over slowly shimmering guitars.
