When the Beach Boys went surfin’ lyrically all over the USA, they stayed mostly in California: Pacific Palisades, San Onofre, Redondo Beach, etc. Singer-surfer Joel C Bennett clearly favors the Ventura County line: C-Street, Silver Strand, Channel Islands. And he wrote the songs to sing the Central Coast’s praises. His debut album, “Mainsail,” released in January, is a surf-rock tribute to our local waters. I see the waves rising from C-Street to the Channel Islands She is the sun and she shines on me I hear the music playing from Skate Street to the Channel Islands My heart is beating like a drum machine. Those lines are from the album’s effusive opening track, “Endless Summer.” Bennett, who recorded the album as a solo act, has rounded up a troupe of fellow surfer-musicians from Ventura to back him from now on. The band, dubbed Mainsail, will make its live debut at two shows in downtown Ventura this weekend, tonight at Good Bar and Saturday at Billy O’s. Bennett, who describes Mainsail’s style as “surf-influenced indie rock,” said “it’s not like when you think of surf music you think of Jack Johnson or reggae. We’re definitely not that. The surf aspect of it is more the spirit of surfing. To me surfing is a very ritualistic, sacred thing. You get up early, put your board on the car, go on PCH, hop in the water and say a prayer.”
